About The YP Foundation

The YP Foundation (TYPF) is a youth-led organisation that facilitates young people’s feminist and right-based leadership on issues of health equity, gender justice, sexuality rights, and social justice. TYPF ensures that young people have the information, capacity, and opportunities to inform and lead the development and implementation of programmes and policies that impact their lives and are recognised as skilled and aware leaders of social change.

About the Safe Abortion For Everyone (SAFE) Programme

The Safe Abortion For Everyone (SAFE) Programme aims to foster an ecosystem that enables access to reproductive health services and fact-based, non-judgemental information while safeguarding reproductive rights for all individuals, especially marginalized adolescents and young people. The programme achieves this through capacity and leadership building, knowledge building and evidence generation, and  enabling a narrative shift to center youth-affirmative voices. We have conducted exploratory research on the widespread myths and misconceptions on abortion in Assam, Delhi and Kerala. In addition, SAFE also runs youth leadership initiatives that build capacities of young people in advocating for the abortion rights of different marginalized communities. The programme also shifts the mainstream discourse around abortion via social media campaigns which work to generate awareness among young people about abortion rights and access, address the social stigma around abortion, and tackle misinformation and harmful rhetoric around abortion.

The SAFE Youth Leadership Programme

Access to abortion is conditional and regulated by complex socio-legal restrictions. Despite the availability of safe and legal abortion in India, socio-cultural stigmas and taboos, prevalent myths, misinformation and inaccessibility of medico-legal information, and bureaucratic delays adversely impacts an abortion seeker’s bodily autonomy, agency and rights. Our work aims to destigmatize abortion seeking and provide accurate information to abortion seekers and the ecosystem of caregivers. We advocate for a rights-based perspective to abortion and the right of all pregnant persons to make autonomous decisions around when, how, with whom and whether or not to get pregnant or give birth.

TYPF offers a Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) to equip young people with knowledge, skills and community enabling them to contribute to and strengthen the abortion rights and reproductive justice movement in India. As part of the YLP, we build the capacity of young people around abortion rights, SRHR, collectivising and building evidence and knowledge. Our immersive youth leadership programme equips them to create community-specific interventions on abortion, and promote sensitivity and care to challenge prevailing fear, misinformation, myths, and stigmas around abortion-related healthcare in India. In our first two rounds of the youth leadership program our youth leaders have conducted country-wise audits of healthcare facilities and implemented social action projects focused on building resources and awareness regarding abortion within their communities. Objectives of the Youth Leadership Programme

  • To build the perspective of young people to understand abortion from a lens of bodily autonomy, power, and a sexual and reproductive health right rooted in the reproductive justice framework.

  • To build capacity of young people to undertake action within their community towards abortion rights and reproductive justice.

  • To co-build spaces for dialogue and action on abortion rights in the cities of youth leaders focussed on increasing awareness using their SAPs, campaigns, and events.
